A Manang Air Airbus H125 helicopter (registration 9N-AMV) left Surke in Solukhumbu shortly after 10 a.m., heading for Kathmandu, and lost contact with air traffic control less than ten minutes later. It was found crashed at Chihandanda in the Lamjura area. All six on board died: Captain Chet Bahadur Gurung and five members of a Mexican family who had been visiting the region.
Early reporting pointed to bad weather. The crash came in the middle of the monsoon, when cloud often sits on the ridges between the Khumbu and Kathmandu and when most helicopter traffic in the region is sightseeing, cargo or evacuation flights rather than expedition support.
