George Band and Joe Brown of a British expedition led by Charles Evans made the first ascent of Kanchenjunga on 25 May 1955; Norman Hardie and Tony Streather followed the next day. Honouring a promise to the Chogyal of Sikkim that the sacred summit would not be trodden on, they stopped a short distance below the actual top. Many climbers since have kept to the same custom.
