Narayanan Iyer (52), a climber from Maharashtra on a Pioneer Adventure expedition, died on 5 May 2022 at about 8,200 metres during his summit attempt. The company’s managing director said Iyer had been told not to continue above 8,000 metres because of his condition but insisted on climbing on, and later collapsed.
His death became a frequently cited example of a hard problem on commercial expeditions: how far a guide can, or should, force a paying client to turn around.
