Toshio Imanishi of Japan and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa made the first ascent of Manaslu on 9 May 1956, as part of a Japanese expedition that had tried the mountain in the two previous years. The climb is a point of national pride in Japan, which has maintained a close connection to the mountain since, and it is why Manaslu is sometimes called “the Japanese mountain”.
